The Basics of Making a Good Website Great

The Basics of Making a Good Website Great

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Turn browsers into buyers with powerful website copy keeping in mind the importance of celebrating your own uniqueness.

Develop a genuine curiosity in people

Put yourself in your customers’ shoes, listen to the questions they are asking and figure what is it they really need from you. Curiosity helps us see the world through a new lens, helps you understand your clients and helps you to find the keywords they are using in search queries. Think from their point of view wherever decisions need to be made and your website will be successful.

Once you own ‘what you really want to be known for,’ you will accomplish more than you thought possible. What really makes you and your business different? Does your website express that?

Define your ideal client

Narrow the audience to widen the influence. Work on defining your ideal client profile before tackling SEO tactics.

Not getting traffic is a symptom but the primary cause is lack of clarity and content. When you don’t know who you are talking to, it is hard to know what to talk about!

Keyword Research

Keyword research is the first feedback mechanism to tell if you understand your ideal client. Done correctly it will give you all the insight you need and can better define the language to use to reach your ideal client.

Put your personality into it

Your business fingerprint is made up of your life experiences, professional expertise, and brilliant personality; all of which can literally reach into the hearts and minds of your potential customers and inspire them to do business with you.

Unique ‘About’ page

Your About page is where you can really let your uniqueness shine. Talk about why you love what you do so much and include a photograph of yourself or your team actually doing it. Other lovers of your craft will connect with this far more than with copy that simply says ‘At Carmen’s  Coffee we pride ourselves on excellent customer service’.

Testimonials about YOU

Encourage testimonial-givers to write about you, rather than just your business. Something more personal wins every time: Carmen has a natural gift for coffee-making – you can just taste the love she puts into it! I wouldn’t trust anyone else to make it just the way I like it, and I’ve recommended her to all my family and friends’.

Write in the first person

If you feel it’s appropriate, consider writing in the first person rather than the third person throughout your website copy. Rather than writing ‘Carmen delivers up on time,’ infuse a bit of personality into your web copy and write, ‘I am as keen for coffee as you are, that’s why I turn up on time and with a smile!’

Why Website Optimisation Makes Sense (…and cents!)

Why Website Optimisation Makes Sense (…and cents!)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

You’re out and about in the summer heat and you blow a plugger! Damn, those things cost you a small fortune and you even got the gold detail on the toe. Time to find a replacement before you fall and break your neck.

You pull out your phone and google ‘thongs near me.’

With your head in your phone, you walk past a convenience store with a rack of flip flops out the front and becoming increasingly frustrated that you can’t find what you’re looking for online. Then, the second page of your search, with no description in the listing you spot ‘Mike’s Sports Store,’ and click on it hoping your phone doesn’t blow up with bugs from this dodgy-ass domain.

So, next click, your phone doesn’t blow up but your patience might as you see the website is one of those annoyingly un-optimized for mobile sites you have to spin and pull and slide around awkwardly to even see the offerings on the front page.

You’re burning crimson as you become the most hated human on the street – the one that crashes into people because you’re on a mission to find what you need deep in the caverns of the internet.

You find a hidden menu and hurrah! They list ‘thongs.’ With no picture. Shit, what horrid fashions are you going to end up with on your feet, you wonder?

Now for an address….’back to the home page, it’ll be right at the top on the front.’ Nope. ‘Ummm, contact page come at me. Where is the contact page??’

Bump. Crash. ‘Oui!’ ‘I’m sorry!’

Address! Ok, got it. But wait. There’s no clickable link to Google Maps to help you get there.

Brain explosion.
‘Do these people not want my money??!’

You’re flabbergasted and this seemingly simple task has taken so long you’re now running late. But you’re even more flabbergasted when you actually get to Mike’s Sports Store.

It’s bloody great! It’s clean and stocked full of your favorite thongs. They even have the style you want!

After finalizing your purchase seamlessly in the store, you’re making your way to meet your mate and wondering…’WHY???’

‘Why does one not match the other?’
‘Why do businesses make it so difficult to be found?’
‘Why do they not understand where their customers might be coming from?’
‘Why are they underselling themselves so much online when they clearly have oodles to offer?’

‘Ben and Sam said this stuff is important and now I know why. I think I better call that shop and recommend they go see Ben and Sam.

‘Now I just have to find their bloody phone number……’
