Business Coaching & Business Consulting - What's the Difference?

Business Coaching

A coach works to develop the skills you already have and is there to motivate and guide you to achieve your goals.

He or she is there to help you with brainstorming, action planning and to provide accountability.

Coaching, in this respect, could be considered less prescriptive; a good coach will help and empower you to find your own solutions.

Business Consulting

Consultants, on the other hand, offer insight and support with more specialised tasks.

In the context of building a business, this could include things like Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), marketing planning or website design.

They’re there ‘hands-on’ to provide business skills in areas that you need, but you aren’t an expert in.

You might read this and think that both sound useful, so how do you choose?

Well, it all depends on the circumstances. There are times when it is helpful to work alongside a coach, who will help you figure things out, while on other occasions you might need the concrete, practical solutions that a consultant offers.

We agree with this sentiment, which is why we decided to offer both consulting and coaching services.

But if you still need convincing, here are some more reasons why it helps to have both a coach and a consultant to draw upon for your business.

Get quick solutions, as well as long-term support

One advantage of utilising the services of both a coach and a consultant is that a consultant will usually offer help on a time-limited, short-term basis. He or she is there to solve a specific problem.

On the other hand, a coach is there to guide you over the long-term. For example, if you decide to build a website, you might turn to a consultant for specific technical advice on some aspects of designing and building it. Once you have that information, however, you might find it useful to have a coach for ongoing support to find new content, brainstorm blog post ideas or develop your web-based skills.

Build every aspect of your business

Building a successful business has many different elements to it and not all of them are obvious. It may be clear, for example, that you need a watertight SEO or social media strategy, which is where the focused, highly expert advice of a consultant may come in handy. When it comes to the more holistic aspects, however, a coach can be very beneficial.

For example, an important – yet sometimes overlooked – component in building a business is the teamwork and interpersonal relations between your staff. As a coach is ‘embedded’ in your business over the longer term, they will gain an understanding of your team’s unique dynamics. These insights can then be used to help manage relationships and support long-term behaviour change.

Benefit from personal and professional development

Many people go into business and wealth creation not only wanting to develop professionally but also on a personal level. Having the expert advice of a consultant will certainly help with your professional development; you’ll likely come out of a consultancy brimming with new insights and information.

But having the ongoing support of a coach can also help develop a broader and deeper range of skills. According to an International Coach Federation report, 80 percent of people who use coaching services feel more confident as a result. And a further 70 percent reported improved work performance, communication and even relationship skills.

This is because coaches work one-on-one with individuals in your team and inspire them to generate their own solutions and strategies. With the answers being discovered by the individuals themselves, this helps grow their confidence, increase their job satisfaction and improve their emotional competence.

Moreover, a study by the University of Sydney has found that wellbeing benefits don’t just apply exclusively to the individuals being coached – they can also have a ‘ripple effect’ on other members of the organisation. In other words, while coaching may operate primarily at an individual level, its benefits are generally more widespread.

Know when to rely on your own advice and when to ask for help

There’s a great analogy from Nick Bosk from the International Coaching Academy that sums up the difference between coaching and consulting well. Bosk describes consulting as creating a hierarchy, where the consultant is at the top of the knowledge pyramid. This is because the consultant is being relied upon for expert, often highly specialised advice. Your job as a client is to listen and absorb their expertise and apply it as best you can.

In the coaching-client relationship, however, this hierarchy is inverted. Ultimately, the client knows what’s best for their business, they just need guidance and the tools to help find the answers to their challenges.

This gets to the crux of why it’s important to draw on both consultants and coaches like Ben & Sam to help build your best business possible. There are some problems where we need to consult with others in order to reach the best solution. We can’t be experts in everything and learning from others is a crucial part of running a successful business.

However, it’s also important to develop our own instincts. This is where a coach can build you up to become an effective leader and manager, bringing benefits not only to you as an individual, but also to others around you and to your business as a whole.

Send the message. Ask the question. Start the conversation. Do the thing.
